ACCIDENTALLY SONIC

RESIDENCY AND PROJECT
PIET ZWART INSTITUTE MASTER FINE ART CLASS OF 2019

SOFIA
17–21 SEPTEMBER 2018

A project by Piet Zwart Institute Master Fine Art Class of 2019 and Swimming Pool Education Initiative 2018.

We come to Sofia as visitors to hear the city’s voices and mix in our own. We look for polyrhythms only accidental sonic encounters can create.

From 17 to 21 September, Swimming Pool will host the Piet Zwart Institute Master Fine Art Class of 2019 from Rotterdam. The class, accompanied by writer Jan Verwoert, will set up a walk-in sonic workspace at the gallery where to depart from to meet people and see things, and in which to welcome anyone who wants to say hello and voice their views on art, life and politics and leave their sound or beat on tape.

None of us knows the city or speaks its languages. We’re here to listen. So please drop by or take us out and talk to us about the rhythms Sofia responds to.

The class, consisting of art students with different backgrounds, is attentive to polyrhythms, all distinct and shifting. So, it need not be one rhythm, nor does it need to be harmonic. Polyrhythms is both a metaphor and an method for mixing collective and individual production.

Whatever may happen will be accidental. But the outcome will be performed live at Swimming Pool on Thursday, 20th September, in the evening at 18 h and later this fall, at Wolfart Projectspace in Rotterdam.
